The fool: a contemporary photographic interpretation beside its traditional tarot card.

tarot cards are used to bridge the disparate natures of transcendental, mysterious entities and the concrete, worldly ones. this is commonly used for fortune-telling — to reveal information about one's past, present, and future. while this objective at first glance may seem very deterministic, i feel that tarot actually encourages free will and potential. tarot is first and foremost centered on interpretation through iconography to give its users a peek into a higher mystic truth. the cards themselves do not prescribe the course of anyone's lives, but rather are suggestive of ideas and concepts. it is up to the subject to determine what the cards "mean."

in spite of this potential, the current traditional (i.e. rider-waite) deck is lacking because its illustrations are very much situated in an antiquated time and cultural context. the iconography is rooted in the realities of a 15th-century european population. however, this poses an obvious disconnect with the experiences of tarot's newly diversified audience. i relied on collaborative and improvisational processes in order to construct the images. with the foundational tarot symbolism intact, its representation better aligns with the realities and personal experiences of contemporary people.
